December 15, 2015

On July 1, 2016, a new Noise Regulation (O. Reg. 381/15) will come into force affecting Ontario's workplaces.

Is your workplace affected?
The regulation will extend noise protection requirements to all workplaces under Ontario's Occupational Health and Safety Act, including those currently not covered by the requirements set out in the regulations for Industrial Establishments and Mines and Mining Plants. This includes construction projects, health care facilities, schools, fire and police services etc.

What you need to know:
The new Noise Regulation specifies:

  • The duty of employers to protect workers from hazardous sound levels (i.e. an equivalent sound exposure level of 85 dBA per 8 hours per day)
  • Details on how noise assessments are to be conducted
  • Detailed requirements for protective measures
  • Signage requirements for work areas with high levels of noise
  • Requirements for worker training and instruction

How REA can help you:
REA can help you protecting your workers and staying compliant with the new requirements by:

  • Competent Noise Assessments including noise monitoring, mapping, and personal dosimetry
  • Worker education and training
  • Support in the design, evaluation and selection of protective measures including engineering controls, work practises and hearing protection devices

Health & Safety Training - Popular Courses

REA provides training in a variety of health, safety and environmental subjects. For nearly two decades we run on-going publicly scheduled courses; as well as in-house, custom and online courses. All the REA courses are taught by extremely well qualified and experienced OHS professionals.

OHS for Managers and Supervisors - the 'Competent Person' Course

The entire concept of a 'Competent Person' course was pioneered in the Ontario marketplace in 1997 by REA, and subsequently copied by a variety of other providers. REA's course has been variously described by employers and participants as one of the best OHS courses they've experienced, and one of the most effective in positively shaping supervisory attitudes and skills. For this reason, many REA clients contract for delivery of this course on an in-house basis many times per year, year after year.

Joint Health and Safety Committee (JHSC) Member Certification Training

JHSCs are required in Ontario workplaces covered by the Occupational Health and Safety Act where 20 or more workers are employed. REA is a Ministry of Labour Approved Provider of JHSC Basic Certification Training.
